April 4, 2012

This has been quite an interesting week in Kamakwie; it has been extremely hot as well some turbulence among staff. Is it because of the heat or is it because of Satan wanting to disturb the work of the Lord in this place? I don’t think we know for sure but we do need to keep praying.
In the Leach household, we have kept busy with the usual activities….feeding five med students three times per week and having them ”hang out” here from time to time throughout the day. Some come just to have a quiet place to get away from the others and read, somestop to rest on the way to their house, and some just stop to chat. They will be here only another two weeks, after which there will be no more med students this year. It has been fun chatting with them, picking their brains about things we are trying to teach our NA students and just hear about their lives and their plans. They also contribute a great deal to our NA students when they are in the hospital trying to apply the things they have learned in class.
Bud has reached a couple milestones…he and his guys (Andrew & John) have gotten the roof on the building beside the generator house ready to put on the corrugated pan, he has gotten his rail saw from the 70’s operating again as well as several other pieces of equipment that makes the work much easier.  He has drawn plans and cost estimates for a new operating room and water line system and will be installing a new air conditioner in the current operating room this next week or so.
As usual, class has been interesting as we try to explore new things each day in the health care world. Today, we learned how to check blood sugars on each other. They had a lot of fun with that and really did a good job doing them correctly. Pray these students will develop a strong desire to do things the “right way” even if others are not doing so.
Meredith and I went shopping Saturday morning at the local market. One part of it is like going through the products/clothing in a Good Will store. Each of us purchased a couple items which pleased the vendors. We also went to several of the shops and purchased some candles as well as a few other items needed in the home.
One of the NA students is asking to learn to use the computer, so I am attempting to show him some very basic skills such as using the keyboard to send and receive e-mails. There is a center in Kamakwie where people can go and use a computer for a small fee.In fact, one of our students has sent friend requests to both Meredith and me on Face book. It was kind of fun to get that request!

This Thursday, we are having all the NA students come to our home for lunch and then spend some time looking at some of the pictures Meredith and I have taken of the group and their activities. That should be a fun afternoon.

This morning, they had a meeting for all the staff working in the Sierra Leone Health Care centers, so we got to chat with the RN from Kissy (Freetown area) and the CHO from Gbendembu. The RN from Kissy was in secondary school in Kamabai when we were here back in the 70's; it is great to see her performing in an outstanding manner in this clinic.
I trust each of you will have a wonderful Easter and celebrate the resurrection of our living Christ.  Blessing to all.
