We have had some good days at Macha so far; there’s lots of good clinical experiences there. Two more students delivered babies yesterday which was the highlight of their day! We spent the morning with Dr. Sungano, the Program Director at the Malaria Institute. He lectured on the basic biology of the malaria parasite life cycle as well as reviewing both the signs and symptoms of malaria as well as treatment options. We will spend all day Monday with him lecturing on various aspects of malaria, their program and their discoveries related to their malaria research. As one would expect, he is extremely knowledgeable and easy to understand.
We took all the students to eat at the little café by the Museum Saturday evening which was a delightful experience. They put us all together in a little thatched roof open-air building. We had candlelight, and they served delicious food. It was a nice change from the food we have been receiving. Since it’s fairly close, we walked both ways all in a group so we felt very safe. (Bud & I took a cab since he was still on crutches!).
Pam, Katana, and I went to a tea at Choma Central Church Saturday afternoon which was another wonderful experience. The ladies of the three Choma churches went together and sponsored this tea to raise funds to help the needy among them. They served tea, coffee, hot chocolate, scones, cakes, and popcorn. The church was nicely decorated with streamers and balloons. Each church had a couple special songs they performed, including dancing. The emcee informed us that the Bible tells us to dance so we should be doing that in church! A speaker (mamma to all) gave a very short but meaningful devotional, and then they served refreshments and fellowshipped.I talked quite a bit to Ruth Hamunyanga who graduated from Marion College in 1968. She wanted to know what the college is like today. She had Dr. Elder as a teacher when she was here. She would love to return to campus and see all the changes. She is retired from teaching here in Zambia.
Next Sunday, we plan to have our team perform a couple a couple songs and perhaps a short skit at Champonde Church. Then sometime in November, we’ll do the same performance at Choma Central and Machipapa Road Church. The students are excited about this. Laura Marie, one of the students, will present a short sermon which they kind of expect when a visiting group comes in. We are considering doing "Peter and John went to pray" which will be kind of a skit. We will also do "Happy Day" as performed in Sister Act with Whoopi Goldberg :-). The congregation will love it!
As you can tell, we are having fun as well as working in the hospital and going to class (students, not Bud & me). Bud has been asked by the electrical team that is helping in Kamakwie to go check out a site close to Macha where they have installed a new generator. They also want him to look at the site in Zimba where they plan to install a new generator. They are asking him to evaluate the site to see if it's the best place to build the generator house.
Until next time....if there are specific things you would like to hear about, let me know and I will try to include them.
